The Journal of Mechanical Engineering recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and the tools utilizing it can be useful auxiliary means in the process of preparing scientific publications. However, the use of such technologies should be carried out in compliance with the principles of academic integrity, scientific responsibility and transparency.
Authors may use AI technologies in the process of preparing manuscripts only as an auxiliary tool, in particular for:
- searching for literature and analytical materials (with subsequent verification of sources);
- creating illustrative materials (schemes, diagrams, visualizations), if their use does not distort the scientific content;
- assisting in the translation of literary sources;
- preparing technical elements of the manuscript (spelling check, formatting).
The use of AI is strictly prohibited in cases where it may call into question the originality, reliability or scientific integrity of the paper, in particular:
- generation of scientific content (problems statement, description of methods, analysis of results) that the authors have not checked and confirmed;
- automatic creation of references or bibliographies, which may lead to fictitious or incorrect sources;
- masking plagiarism by paraphrasing or automated rewriting of other people’s texts;
- use of AI as a co-author of the paper – artificial intelligence systems cannot be recognized as authors or co-responsible for scientific results.
Authors are required to clearly indicate in the “Acknowledgements” section or in a special note which AI tools were used and for what purpose. The indication should be as transparent as possible (for example: “During the preparation of the paper, the authors used the Grammarly tool to translate literary sources” or “The MATLAB system with AI analytics elements was used to create graphs”). Concealing the facts of the AI usage is considered a violation of the principles of academic integrity.
The authors bear full responsibility for the content of the paper, the reliability of the results and the accuracy of the interpretations. The use of AI does not exempt authors from the obligation to ensure scientific novelty, accuracy and compliance with ethical standards. In the event of violations of the policy on the AI usage, the editorial board has the right to demand corrections, reject or withdraw the paper.
This policy has been developed taking into account the recommendations of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and leading scientific publishers. The journal strives to maintain a balance between innovation and academic integrity, ensuring transparency and trust in scientific publications.
